TRANSFORMING LIVES BEHIND BARS
Our Mission
Prison Seminaries Foundation Colorado (PSFCO) is working to make moral rehabilitation a reality within Colorado's prison system by providing selected inmates with quality, accredited education. Research has shown that recidivism and new crimes can be reduced by transforming the lives of inmates in Colorado’s prisons through moral rehabilitation. When prisoners take responsibility for their own transformation, it is powerful and lasting. This prison seminary program offers qualified inmates the opportunity to become peer ministers and help to facilitate the positive transformation of prison culture “inside the walls” of our state prisons.
Education
We are partnering with Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary (MABTS) to provide Bachelor’s Degrees in Biblical Studies to our inmate leaders with an emphasis in Christian Counseling. The President of MABTS refers to these inmate students as “missionaries in training.”
Statewide Influence
Inmates who have been morally rehabilitated through our peer-to-peer ministry model and are paroled into our communities commit fewer crimes, reducing victimization and recidivism (fewer people returning to prison). So, our communities become safer!
Peer-to-Peer Ministry
This form of ministry has proven to change lives radically for the better. This results in a positive impact on the inmate population, as inmates hold one another accountable for good behavior. Relationships between inmates and prison staff improve. Program participants and graduates provide support and guidance to other inmates that no external programs can provide. As a result, violence in our state’s prisons will be dramatically reduced over time!
Becoming Agents of Change
Through the prison seminary model, moral rehabilitation has the power to effect positive changes in people’s lives, thus breaking generational cycles of dysfunction caused by crime, violence, and substance abuse. Our prison seminary program participants reconnect with family members while in prison, and inmate parents re-establish healthy relationships with their children (this is huge). Another result is that broken relationships between the families of those incarcerated and the inmates are often restored.
Impacting Culture
Since we have brought the seminary to Limon CF, we have seen a major shift in the facility's culture. Positive change is already occurring, and there is a positive impact on residents, staff, and administration.
